Blue Light in the Digital World
"We live in a digital world and extended screen time
is quickly becoming the norm in our everyday lives. Prolonged usage of digital
devices, including computers, tablets, and smartphones, increases your exposure
to Harmful Blue Light, which can lead to eye strain, blurred vision, headaches,
and trouble sleeping. Reduce your exposure with regular breaks and digital
protection glasses." Clearly
Depending on the energy/wavelength of individual rays from the sun, the electromagnetic spectrum/radiation is formed. Combined the spectrum create the white light.
The Red end
of the spectrum contain light with longer wavelengths and less energy.
On the other end, blue rays have shorter wavelengths and more energy.
Blue
light is significantly around us with the sun being the largest source of the
light. Other sources include Fluorescent light, CFL (compact fluorescent light)
bulbs, LED light, Flat screen LED televisions, Computer monitors, smart phones,
and tablet screens.
The eye is effective in blocking UV light from reaching the
retina however almost all visible blue light passes through the cornea and lens
and reaches the retina.
Blue light in regulated amounts is useful to the human
body. It helps in keeping the brain alert, memory, regulates the body’s wake
and sleep cycle (circadian rhythm) and in the general growth and development of
the eyes and vision.
Too much exposure to the blue light however has its
negative effects. A few include:
1. Decreased contrast leading to eyestrain: fatigue, dry eyes,
bad lighting, how you sit in front of the computer can cause eyestrain as
well. The symptoms of eyestrain include sore or irritated eyes and difficulty
focusing.
damage light-sensitive cells in the retina.(macular
degeneration).
With that little information, it is important then that we
watch our eye-health as far as blue light is concerned.
You can have breaks between work time in front of a computer screen, this will reduce the amount of time spent on the screens. You can use filters, there are screen filters attached to electronic screens or you can get computer glasses specifically for this function. These special-purpose glasses are available without an eyeglass prescription, among other ways.
